Unlock Your Authentic Singing Voice: 3 Steps and Exercises to Stand Out from the Crowd
Welcome to today's vocal coaching session! We'll be focusing on developing your authentic singing voice and standing out from the crowd. Today, I'll be sharing with you my three-step formula for finding your unique sound, accompanied by four straightforward exercises.
What does it mean to have a true voice? Is there such a thing as a fake voice? Some singers mimic others their whole lives, never discovering their authentic sound. However, once you unlock the potential of your own voice, you'll experience more enjoyment and have a wider range of vocal choices.
So, let's dive into the three steps and four exercises.
Step 1: Find your open throat.
An open throat is essential for a balanced tone. It doesn't mean poking a hole in your throat; it simply refers to a free, unconstricted throat that allows for optimal resonance. Exercise 1 involves speaking the five standard English singing vowels with an open throat: Ah, Eh, Ee, Oh, and Oo.
Step 2: Discover your frontal buzz.
This refers to the focused, vibrant sound that comes from resonating in the front of your face. It's not about being nasal or forcefully pushing your voice forward, but rather achieving a natural brightness and carrying power. Exercise 2 is humming and transitioning to a five-tone scale on "Mm" and "Mom."
Step 3: Explore your backspace.
This means creating a fuller sound by engaging the back of your throat. Every voice needs a balance of treble and bass, and this step helps establish that harmony. Exercise 3 involves speaking and singing the word "yeah" with a focus on the backspace.
A great exercise to do is an original exercise that combines the elements of the previous steps. Sing a phrase like "Bee, bay, by, ba, boo" while maintaining an open throat, frontal buzz, and backspace. By consistently practicing these exercises, you'll establish a strong foundation for your unique voice, which you can then adapt to various styles and vocal colors.
Remember, the key to singing in different styles and textures is to first uncover your true, unique voice. Embrace your individual sound, as it's as unique as your fingerprint. By doing so, you'll have more choices and enjoyment in your singing journey.
